Many times within our modern society, these conflicting desires often commingle until we lose all sense of our priorities. The Dream Grimoire helps to confront this reality, and serves to show people where their goals truly lie and illuminate a possible path to reach them.

It contains no technical elements, depending solely on the performer, and set up takes a matter of minutes, with no lasting clean up. Its main guiding principles are in self motivation, and what I refer to as “The Tao of the Two Year Old.” Essentially, by asking “Why” often enough, we get to some deep truths about ourselves.

Once there, they are welcomed and greeted warmly. They are then asked what could pass for a simple question: “If you could have anything that you wanted, right in this moment, anything at all, what would it be?”

Children often view the Grimoire as a wishing mechanism, where they offer their wishes, writing them in the book, and placing their mark.

Depending upon the receptivity of the individual during the performance, the actor will encourage them to vocalize this, and break down what they once considered a monumental task into a small first step on their desired path. When the Individual then writes that first step into the Grimoire, they receive additional encouragement (and a motivational call to action by the Performer) that by writing it down they are in fact making a promise with themselves that they will continue to move down that path to their goals.

The New Years Celebrations (both solar and lunar), Ramadan, and Rosh Hashanah all immediately spring to mind, but similar events focusing on the idea of recentering oneself seems to be a relatively universal concept.

By creating a performance piece can be at home nearly everywhere (and indeed it has found a home with such varied venues as First Night Pittsburgh, the Romero Lives! Festival, Art All Night, and a residency with the Downtown Pittsburgh Partnership at Mellon Square), Theatre Sans Serif hopes to illustrate a path of its own through accessible and inclusive theater.

Going back to my sideshow roots, we had two shows a day, three days in a row. It was tiring, but a rather good show.

Moving on to magic, we are proud to announce that we will be joining in with the First Night Pittsburgh celebrations on New Year's eve. More details may be found on the schedule here: http://www.firstnightpgh.org/fest_event/dream-grimoire/

We are looking forward to sharing the Dream Grimoire with the community once again. In this one on one performative piece, the central character is the participant. The Librarian guides each person on their own journey of self-discovery. Given the piece's success at it's premier at Art All Night, I am looking forward to sharing this with a larger audience. Continuous performances will be held from 6pm to 10pm at First Night.

I hope to see you there, and until next time,

I have recently returned to work from a long (at least for me) leave of absence. I am perfectly fine, but someone close to me was not, so I put the priority of taking care of them first. To that end, I put a hold on new productions for the time being.

Now that things have begun to stabilize, I am returning to more work. While I was preparing to type this blog post in particular about some of the new projects in the works (which I will be doing later) I received some news that a classmate of mine had ended his life. Naturally, this is more in my thoughts at the moment.

To be fair, to say that he and I were "close" is a dramatic understatement. In fact the closest we were was when I tackled him as we were practicing football. In theory, since I made the decision to detach myself from where I went to school, his death shouldn't be hitting very hard. Instead, it is surprisingly so.

Following my graduation, the numbers of people that I attended school with, both high school and college, is slowly starting to dwindle. These have been to a variety of causes, ranging from disease, accidents, drug use, and suicide. In each case, I knew them personally, and had, since the time passed where we had class together, grown more distant. I suppose I am selfish in this case, as each time I hear of another's passing, I think of them, what happened, but then a small voice reminds me that the clock is ticking to achieve what I want to accomplish. This is truly an odd feeling, considering I just recently celebrated my twenty-sixth birthday.

To that end, I am glad to be returning back to the work that I feel I had neglected during my leave. There is much planning, but as usual, it appears that next year will be even bigger than last year.

The best thing to do in this case: Celebrate the season with those you care about, Laugh, and Live.

Until Next Time,
It is not yet the end of the first week of April, and the calendar is already looking incredibly full. After an excellent series of planning meetings, we are proud to announce that one of our latest pieces, The Dream Grimoire will be premiering at Art All Night on April 27th. We are thrilled to be joining in and participating in what has quickly become a Pittsburgh arts institution. More details can be found on their website: http://www.artallnight.org/.

Before that happens, however, we still have two important projects to handle, the first of which is Soup N'at. This fundraiser involves every guest at the event receiving a bowl of soup, bread, and desert, as well as a ballot. This ballot is then used to vote on which group of artist receives the proceeds of that night's event. Theatre Sans Serif's Community Outreach is one of the eligible projects, specifically our efforts at Urban Farming, After School Programs, and a Toy Drive for children in underprivileged families during the holidays. The community has given so much, and we now have an opportunity to help out. The grant would greatly assist with out efforts. The exact details are available on their website as well: http://soupnat.wordpress.com/.

Finally, after much delay, we launch back into rehearsals for Artie Goes West, formerly the Great Big Western Show. After issues with casting, and locations, we are ready, willing, and excited for the show to begin! That will take place in May at the Kaufmann Auditorium, at Hill House.

Theatre Sans Serif has ended it's latest show, Dustin Lance Black's 8. The phenomenal cast included Frank McAleavey, Bill Meoni, Kyle Bostian, Matthew Robinson, Laurie Mann, Kaitlin Mausser, Elizabeth Danko, Joel Ambrose, Dillon Diatlo, Kyle Bogue, Shane Conley, Danielle Winter, Stephanie Swift-Antill, Wesley Gadsden, Dan Derks, and Dave Malehorn. These 16 actors, under the direction of Kelsey Rispin, performed at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts. The show went extremely well, with both laughter and tears, as well as some thought provoking questions.

As the Artistic Director, I would like to thank the cast and director for seeing this project through, and for all of the energy and effort they put in on the project. I must also say the same for my parents, whose support and staffing made the bake sale so successful that it completely underwrote the reading. Finally, last but not least, I would like to thank the Hillman Center for Performing Arts for having us there. I look forward to seeing you at our next major project, Artie Goes West, at the Kaufman Auditorium, May 9-18.
Until next time,

On March 22nd, 2013, 21 actors will tackle a staged reading of 8 by Dustin Lance Black. This script, based upon the real life events surrounding the testing if Proposition 8 is Constitutional. This proposition called for California to disallow gay marriage. This fundamental right is being denied to our LGBT brothers and sisters, and as a result, Theatre Sans Serif is holding this reading to both raise awareness for the issue, and to fully announce our support for the cause. Directed by Kelsey Rispin, this phenomenal cast will bring this issue home to Pittsburgh, and at an especially important time, as this case is due to be seen by the Supreme Court on the Monday following.

The reading will take place in the Kountz Black Box Theater, at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts in Fox Chapel, at 8 pm. A talk back with the actors and several local figures will take place immediately following. For tickets, as seating is somewhat limited, please email us at theatresansserif@gmail.com.

This reading will be performed free to the public, but we are in need of some help. We are accepting donations at this time to help cover the costs of renting the space, and to print scripts for the actors. If you would like to help in either case, please call us at (412) 523-9882 for exact details.

On February 23, Theatre Sans Serif had the opportunity to attend TEDxGrandviewAvenue. This event brings together some of the best and brightest from the fields of technology, science, engineering, design, the arts, and business to create an environment that encourages the exchange of ideas. I think everyone came away inspired to work to change our circumstances, our city, and hopefully the world. Personally, I now have several ideas to move forward and increase Theatre Sans Serif's involvement in community development.

One thing happens, which leads to another, and sometimes the avalanche occurs.

At this point in time, The Great Big Western Show has been (temporarily) postponed. This is unfortunately due to a combination of cast illness, and problems at the performance space. At this point, some plans have to be shifted, but a viable plan is forming.

There are contracts to be discussed, but the general plan is for the residency program at Future Tenant to be postponed until August, at which time a new script will be premiered at the residency. Meanwhile, negotiations are taking place for a venue to premiere, and we are aiming for May.

In the meantime, things are moving ahead at full speed for our reading of "8" on March 22, 2013 at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts. This is going to be especially relevant as the case in question, Hollingsworth v. Perry, formerly Perry v. Schwarzenegger, will be going before the Supreme Court 4 days after that on March 26.

This reading will be performed free to the public, in the hopes of raising awareness about the issue of marriage equality. Many strides have been made, but we still have far to go. We are hoping to raise awareness at this critical juncture. Please join us for this reading, and a discussion afterwards. For tickets, please email us at theatresansserif@gmail.com, or call (412) 523-9882.

Until next time,
And on it does. We hit a few major snags recently, but after a few hair-pulling, sleepless nights, the problem seems to be solved.

Now that the cast is mostly off book, we are really starting to have a lot of fun with the physical aspects of the show. The Commedia dell'Arte is a very physical art form, and I think we are doing it justice, ranging from the circus arts of Doc Bernie, to Artie and Bo's slapstick, to the pratfalls and girlish screaming of the not so brave Captain. While all of this is going on, Kelsey is keeping a watchful eye over the cast (myself included) to make sure no one gets hurt.

We were also pleased last Friday to do a quick preview of some of the effects in the show for the Open Mic at Future Tenant. The audience response was fantastic. I hope to see you all there.

Well, I must go back to work, it seems like the paperwork never ends to produce a show. And of course, more rehearsal photos are below.

Until next time,
The more aware among you might have noticed that the first rehearsal log was not written by me. Instead, it was written by the new Associate Artistic Director, Kelsey. You will be seeing plenty more of her.

One of the hardest parts of directing is the blocking. In the case of a venue such as Future Tenant, this is doubly so, due to the smaller confines of the space. This means that every move, every cross needs planned and timed out. Fortunately, with today's rehearsal, the actors now have all of the blocking for the show, and we can now focus on the physical comedy, as well as the lines.

We also started to touch on all of the fight work and physical comedy in the script. There are kicks, punches, slaps, falls, kisses, and head butts. There is also a lot of magic and sideshow stunts (fortunately, my specialty.) Part of me is a little worried about just how exhausted we are going to be on the 23rd, with its two shows, but I think we will get through it.

There really haven't been that many amusing anecdotes from these rehearsals, as we have been incredibly busy. I will therefore leave you with a few more images to tease you as to what we are doing.

Until next time,

So, the show has had kind of a rough start (better now than later, though!) - due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, we had to find a new rehearsal space for the first few weeks of the month. Luckily, we found a wonderful space with people who have been extremely gracious, I can't wait to start rehearsals there!

However, because of aforementioned rehearsal space complications, we had to have our most recent rehearsal/table talk at Milano's restaurant on 6th. It was a really fun and productive time, and as promised, full of fun stories.

So FIRST, the cast ordered a large pizza to share, because nothing fuels creativity like food. As we're divvying up the slices, someone, and I won't name names, tried to pass the entire pizza tier down to the other end of the table. One thing lead to another, and about 3/4 of the pizza slid off the tier, past someone else, and both pizza and metal plate crashed onto the floor. Not only that, but there is an open space in between the floor and window of the second floor of Milano's, and that's where much of the pizza went. So essentially, we made it rain pizza on anyone of the first floor. (You're welcome) Thankfully, our waitress wasn't angry, we cleaned up the pizza and got another, and the waitress blamed the mess on the party of children that were also upstairs. Note: I do feel slightly guilty about that, because that group of 20 or so children were about a million times better behaved than we were.

Second, we had another read-through of the script at the table, so everyone could get more comfortable with the flow of the show and address and questions/concerns. During said reading, we were probably louder than average, but it was manageable until we got to a heated part of the script and someone shouted "HELP! HEEELLP!" He was immediately shushed by the rest of the table, but not before everyone in the restaurant turned to look at our section. Indignance abounded, and rehearsal had to be paused while we got our giggles under control.

All's well that ends well, though - a combination of a truly wonderful and good-natured waitress, a large tab and a healthy tip made sure we are still welcome back, and the show has had its first round of embarrassing occurrences. At least after that rehearsal, no one should be afraid to act foolish in rehearsals, which is exactly what we'll need - this show is pretty exclusively foolish :) That being said, if anyone's looking for a place to eat/purchase libation downtown, I recommend Milano's...Partially because I like it there, and partially because I feel like we owe them patronage :P

That's all for now, check back soon for more tomfoolery!

Kelsey

P.S. Here's a picture of the pizza carnage - it got stuck on the glass of the atrium. Thanks, Kyle for risking personal shame to get this pic

The Great Big Western Show is officially under way! Auditions were had, the cast list made, and with the first rehearsal out of the way, I am confident this will be an amazing experience, for cast and audience alike. We were fortunate enough to pull together a great group of performers, and I couldn't be happier. It's going to be a whirlwind of a reherasal process, but then again, when isn't it?

A little bit about the show: As you may have previously read/heard, this is an original show from Theatre Sans Serif, written in the style of Commedia Dell'Arte, which is a style of old Italian comedy. Don't worry, though, no subtitles are necessary for this show, because we've taken the ancient style of Commedia and applied it to the good ol' American West! It's a funny, farsical, rip-roaring good time, you won't want to miss it!

Working on an original show is ALWAYS exciting, and frightening, and thrilling. All of these emotions are heightened this time around because we are putting up the show in just a few weeks!

We'll be sure to keep you updated as rehearsals progress; with a script like this, there's sure to be some good stories. And remember, come see The Great Big Western Show, Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23 at Future Tenant Gallery on 9th and Penn Ave. And just so the suspense doesn't drive you crazy, here's some behind the scenes photos and the promo pic!

More to come,
I can say that it was one of the most difficult, yet rewarding theatrical experiences I have had. Thanks to the crew out there, Theatre Sans Serif is proud to be associated with making the Festival bi-coastal, and learning how to bring the theatrical community even closer together, and to foster a new degree of collaboration and participation.

To be fair, I was jet lagged for five days in a row, which is understandable, considering we had the first meeting within an hour of landing in the city. I then directed one play, a romantic comedy, followed by a slasher comedy the next night. The entire time, I saw how the 14/ 48 Festival ran as a smooth machine, and took copious notes.

Now, with the help of the Seattle team, we will be bringing the festival to Pittsburgh. Look here and on Facebook for more details as contracts are made, and ground is gained. Also, be sure to check out our reading of "8" at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts on March 22nd.

I must now go back to work, but until next time,
Andrew.
More cast members are signing up everyday, deals are getting worked out, and the script is coming along at a pleasant clip. All in all, this will be an experiment in circus arts and comedy, the likes of which haven't been seen in 500 years. The cast and crew are all chafing at the bit for rehearsals to begin.

The other big news is that I will be working with the 14/48 Festival in Seattle as a director, and we will be meeting to discuss the possibility of bringing it to Pittsburgh. If so, this event will also not be one to miss, as 14 new plays are created over 48 hours. Of course, they can tell it better than I can, so if you have a chance, you should check them out at http://www.1448fest.com/.

Of course, I can't post without a teaser of future work, so here is a glimpse of some of the work being done, sculpting one of the Masks:
It seems that Pennsylvania is once again in the center of an artistic controversy, this time over the statue of late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. Just in case anyone is not aware, Joe Paterno was implicated in covering up the sexual assaults committed by his assistant, Jerry Sandusky. As a result of this situation, the college is now considering removing his statue. While this is a tremendously charged issue, as any situation involving child abuse is wont to be, this is less an issue of what Paterno did, or in this situation, did not do, and more of a case of how his legacy will be remembered. The case will then be if he is remembered for his good accomplishments, or if he will merely be known as the man who could have done more.

The author James W. Lowen once set out the case that a monument is actually a commemoration of two time periods, that of the time it was constructed, in addition to the actual commemoration taking place. This is easily seen in the example of Paterno, as the statue was constructed at the height of his accomplishments, and as such, it was seen as the glorification of him, as well as the college. Now, with his legacy and reputation in doubt, this statue may be seen as something altogether different.

An excellent example of this might be in the case of George Washington. He is naturally considered the "Father of the Country," a title which is actually not that inaccurate. However, he also owned slaves. Moreover, unlike his contemporary Thomas Jefferson, who rankled with the issues posed by stating "all men are created equal" while holding men into the bondage of slavery, it appears Washington had no such scruples.

It might be argued that Washington is a special case however, in the sense that it might be in the Americans self-interest to essentially repress these facts. After all, if Washington is considered the foremost of the Founding Fathers, and he is flawed, then how strong is the foundation on which we rest?

Therefore, we might look to another example to describe the situation going on, with ramifications into today, that of the heroic figure of Christopher Columbus. No known portraits of Columbus exist from his lifetime, yet a proliferation of statues and monuments exist. While Columbus is considered the foremost navigator of today, it might be more accurate to describe him as having one of the world's foremost publicists. In actuality, his accomplishments, while notable, were not the high mark of the age of navigation. However, he is the most well known of the explorers. Meanwhile, in addition to his navigational accomplishments, he is largely responsible for the destruction of the Arawak nation, and the conquest of the Americas. We honor a man who accomplished something great, yet was also incredibly destructive. In the end, we honor the accomplishment, but not the man.

A final example lies in a somewhat lesser known historical figure, from the American Civil War. Nathaniel Bedford Forrest. Markers and monuments to him dot the Southern landscape, as he was one of the best cavalry commanders of the Civil War (this is less conjecture than it seems, as he was noted as such by officers on both sides of the conflict.) He was made notorious by his actions both during the war (including commanding the forces that committed a massacre at Fort Pillow) and immediately following it (commanding the Ku Klux Klan.) Several years later, he reversed his views on race, in favor of reconciliation. In the American South, he is now considered still a hero, but a relatively minor one at that. Some institutions still honor him, but it is tempered by a knowledge of his actions.

I think this is the route that will be, and should be followed in regards to Joe Paterno. His deeds cannot be erased, but we have already noted him for his accomplishments. As such, we should keep his monument in place, but with the knowledge of what he did. It would then serve as a greater monument than ever before, to serve as a monument both to what Joe Paterno actually accomplished, and as a reminder of the dangers of not speaking out.
Artistic Director, Theatre Sans Serif
Theatre Sans Serifhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12211147712158011045noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5004836476882312873.post-35459369094284125092012-06-12T14:52:00.000-07:002012-06-12T14:52:55.231-07:00Projects in Progress.I know it has been a long time since I have updated this, and for that, I must apologize. There has been much going on with my family's health (unfortunately) but now that it seems things are settling out, I have more time to devote to the company.

There have been many things in the works for upcoming shows, and much paperwork has been settled to allow me to finally announce what will be taking place coming up this, and the beginning of next year.

First of all, Theatre Sans Serif will be taking part in Relative Positions, a performing arts residency that will create site specific work within the Union Project in East Liberty. The performance for that will be July 6th. I am very glad to be a part of this, as it seems like the natural next step for Theatre Sans Serif to create fully experimental work.

Following that, in August, we will be producing one of the staged readings at the Pittsburgh New Works Festival. The meeting to select the plays for the festival was last night, and while I can't announce the particular play we will be doing yet, I can say that I am very satisfied with the selection.

The one smaller bit of news is that we will be producing a reading of "8" with the American Foundation for Equal Rights, and Broadway Impact in March of 2013. I am really looking forward to this, as I feel this is a very important subject to be discussed right now. 8 is the theatrical version of the Perry vs. Schwarzenegger trail, written by Dustin Lance Black in response to the blackout order on the trial, over whether Proposition 8 is unconstitutional. I wanted to produce this play very badly, as this issue is one very close to me. I think that bringing this issue to light, and discussing it in the public forum is the only way to change minds.

Finally, in keeping with the idea of bringing the arts to the public, I have decided to launch a new project under Theatre Sans Serif, tentatively titled "Commedia for the Community." The main thrust of this project will be to construct a trailer based stage, which can be easily set up. This stage will then allow us to take a portable theater to the heart of lower income communities in the Pittsburgh area, where a wide variety of classical texts (our predominate focus includes Moliere, Goldini, Ben Jonson, and of course, Shakespeare) will then be performed. This approach of bringing the theater to the people will allow us to serve a large community which otherwise might not have the exposure to the arts. As an additional benefit, having a mobile theater will lower our operating costs greatly, so that these performances can continue to be offered free to the community. This is definitely an open ended project, and any help would be greatly appreciated. If you can offer any assistance, be it ranging from goods, (the things to build a theater, i.e. wood, a trailer base, etc...) services (actually building the trailer) or anything in between, please do not hesitate to contact me at theatresansserif@gmail.com I will keep everyone up to date here on the blog as things progress. I hope to see you all at the events coming up!
That being said, his main "contribution" to education in Pennsylvania was to cut the school budgets by almost a billion dollars. Therein lies the rub, why would the Opera honor a politician for his axe?

I believe this situation deals largely with the delicate position most theatre companies, (and indeed all artists face) when dealing with funding. This instance can trace its origins to a simple conflict of interest. It is the role of the artist to act as a provocateur, but many donors in the private sector (especially corporations) have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. This places the artists in a precarious position, having to choose between artistic integrity and financial solvency.

In this particular instance, I do understand the financial goals of the Opera. Governor Corbett and his wife have been involved with the company for the past decade, and it is natural that the Corbetts would expect some sort of thanks in regards to their previous contributions. It would naturally follow that with those honors going out, the Opera would expect further contributions from the Governor in the future. Nothing is truly notable about this, as this sort of situation occurs in the arts constantly.

The issue becomes a problem, however, as a company picks up the baggage that comes with a donation. This is not a legal situation, but strictly an ethical one. A company has a need to maintain relationships with their donors, as a relationship is an excellent way to establish continued funding. However, in most situations, the need to maintain this company-donor relationship is to make some sort of artistic concession. For a completely hypothetical example, say I had received funding from a far right religious organization. I imagine that would have a few problems if I then decided to stage Agnes of God, Doubt, or The Laramie Project. Most likely, they would threaten to pull their funding for the next time. Therefore, I would be left with a choice, to have financial backing (which does make everything much easier) or to maintain artistic integrity, and personal agency, to be allowed to act as the provocateur that an artist needs to be?

I realize I am oversimplifying the situation, and this may very well be the case. While it is easy to kick sand in the face of the Opera at a time while they are already under fire, I refuse to sit here and state that I would not make the same choice that they did. Artistic Directors are human as well. While I do not think the Opera made a very good decision, I do understand their reasoning. I would like to think that I would have chosen a different path, but who doesn't? I won't make such a statement until both paths are laid out. In the end, yes, the Pittsburgh Opera did damage their reputation slightly as artists. However, by remaining solvent, they ensured that they will continue to produce in the future. The Pittsburgh Opera made a choice, and they must now live with it. This is the danger of receiving funding from the private sector, as the once free artist is now burdened with a debt they must repay.Theatre Sans Serifhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12211147712158011045noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5004836476882312873.post-62101758955210125672012-02-27T10:32:00.000-08:002012-02-27T10:32:51.615-08:00War Is Child's Play: The News is In!

If that is the case, I certainly hope it is true. Theatre Sans Serif celebrated the New Year hard by performing 24 Hour Theatre with First Night Pittsburgh. Within 24 Hours, we created four brand new plays, never before seen. The shows included:

One Way to Woo by Joanna Lowe,
Directed by Lora Oxenreiter, and starring Sara Fisher and Larry Scott

Adrift by F.J. Hartland
Directed by Joanna Lowe, and starring Courtney L. Smith and Liz Pegg

5 Minute Romeo and Juliet by Andrew W. Huntley II
Directed by Tara Lyn Zynel, and starring Ivy Steinberg and David Conley

Beans, Beans, Beans by Tara Lyn Zynel and Courtney L. Smith
Directed by Vince Ventura, and Starring Kaitlin Mausser and Tara Lyn Zynel

Just as a recap for the parameters of the event, no writing was allowed on the play before 7pm on December 30. In order to make sure this didn't happen, there were two surprise elements that each play had to include, a mystery prop, and a line of dialogue. In this case, the mystery prop was a ukulele, and the line of dialogue, "What could possibly go wrong?" The writers made hilarious work of both prompts. For the three shows of the evening, all three performances were standing room only. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard on this production.

And of course, things keep rolling right into the new year on January 15th with the next installment of "My Dearest...": Thoughts From the Front- World War II. It is going to prove to be another exciting reading, and a fitting beginning to the new year, and a new era for Theatre Sans Serif. See you at the show!
It's been a crazy year, and it's still going strong right until the stroke of Midnight New Year's Eve. We still have one more performance of A Christmas Carol, Sunday December 19th, in the English Nationality Room at the Cathedral of Learning. Then, things kick into high gear for the 24 Hour Theatre Experiment with First Night Pittsburgh.

From the website:
"4 Directors. 4 Writers. 8 Actors. And 24 Hours to create brand new theatre art. While a play may "normally" take weeks or months of writing and rehearsals, Theatre Sans Serif will be premiering 4 brand new (literally) one act plays. At 7 pm, the writers begin writing, and have 12 hours to complete the script. At 7 am, it's pencils down, as the directors and actors have 12 hours to memorize and rehearse, all in preparation for the 7 o'clock opening of the first show. Three showings only.
Performances at 7, 8:30 and 9:45 pm."

Also this month, we had our monthly reading series at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, where we were joined by author Alan Simon.

Finally, we completed the first performance of A Christmas Carol, an original reading to benefit the food bank at this time of year.

"A READING FOR FEEDING"

Two free readings benefit Northside Common Ministries
and East End Cooperative Ministries Food Pantries
at Calvary United Methodist Church and Pitt’s English Nationality Room

A "reading for feeding" will benefit local food pantries when Poets Corner welcomes Theatre Sans Serif for two presentations of Charles Dickens’ classic A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Admission is free, but in the spirit of season and the current economy, the first event of this returning arts series will give back, asking audience members to bring non-perishable food times to the performance.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL will be read in two locations, decorated for the season. The intimate Victorian Chapel at the historic Calvary Methodist Church will be the setting on Wed., December 15 at 7 pm at 971 Beech Ave. at Allegheny on the Northside. A brief tour of the restored sanctuary and Tiffany windows will be given at 6:30 pm. Refreshments will be served following the reading.

The likewise cozy English Nationality Room, 144 Cathedral of Learning, will host a reading on Sunday, December 19 at 7 pm. ABOUT "A CHRISTMAS CAROL," A READING FOR FEEDING

Poets Corner founder Yvonne Hudson says, “A CHRISTMAS CAROL is so in keeping with the spirit of our initial season in 2006-07. In planning new programs, I was looking at 2011, but the enthusiasm of Theatre Sans Serif makes it possible to get an early start, gather much needed food for Pittsburghers in need, and return to our spoken word tradition.”

Pittsburgh’s Theatre Sans Serif is dedicated to producing classical and new works, in innovative and widely ranging styles. The company, producing since October 2009, fosters collaboration between arts organizations to promote the artistic community as a whole. David Conley is directing the reading of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which features Tara Zynel, Elizabeth Brinkley, Bob Scott, and Conley. Theatre Sans Serif's Artistic Director Andrew Huntley and Hudson are producers for the events.
Dickens' describes the holidays as "a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of other people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys".

A CHRISTMAS CAROL was published in December 1843. The piece, which Dickens later presented in public readings in the version featured by Poets Corner, exemplified what the author called the “Carol Philosophy”. The tale of Scrooge’s miserly ways and redemption was originally told against the Victorian landscape of poverty and the encroaching industrial age. One of the most popular stories for the Christmas season, CAROL continues to remind readers and audiences of the heart of the season.

“Poets Corner enjoys works that provide listeners with food for thought to last beyond our events,” says Hudson, “and CAROL fits that bill. Dickens is actually buried at Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey, so it seems an appropriate honor to kick start our series with his work.”
Theatre Sans Serifhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12211147712158011045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5004836476882312873.post-85476211666102268862010-11-26T18:42:00.000-08:002010-11-26T18:42:16.282-08:00"My Dearest..."
